Mathematics and Numeracy

The mathematics department is a successful, ambitious and experienced team that consists of seven full time members of staff, two part time members of staff, a Learning Advocate, who is responsible for intervention and a one- to- one Pupil Premium tutor who supports targeted students in class and in small groups.

The mathematics staff work extremely well as a team and are committed to ensuring that every learner, regardless of ability, is given the opportunity to reach his or her full potential.

The department is a vibrant and lively place with seven classrooms and a large heart space. All maths classrooms are equipped with an interactive whiteboard and digital projector.

Mathematics lessons at Lea Manor High School incorporate a wide variety of teaching methods to appeal to different types of learner. Students are encouraged to apply their skills to solve problems in different contexts and to reason mathematically.  We endeavour to use real life contexts wherever possible and, at appropriate times, we use practical activities, paired work, group work and peer learning. The mathematics department is very well resourced with textbooks, class sets of graphical calculators and 60 laptops, as well as many other interactive resources. We also subscribe to MyMaths, MathsWatch and Super Maths World so that students can access resources at home to further extend their learning.

Gifted and talented mathematicians in set 1 of every year group participate in the annual UK Maths Challenge. They compete against the most able mathematicians across the country to receive bronze, silver and gold awards.

Throughout years 7 to 11, students prepare for the new Edexcel GCSE Mathematics 9 - 1 examinations.  These consist of three 1 hour 30 minute papers; one non calculator and two calculator papers.  All year 11 students are expected to attend weekly secure and boost sessions on Tuesdays from 3.10pm to 4pm to prepare them for their upcoming exams.  Saturday, Easter and May half term revision sessions are also delivered and targeted students are invited to attend.
